When we were developing LOGiiT, one of the key decisions we faced was whether to embrace Web2 or dive into the promise of Web3 and blockchain technology. This was not a choice we made lightly. Web3, with its decentralised philosophy and innovative potential, is an exciting frontier, but it also brings complexities that are not well-suited to the specific needs of our users in the offshore industry.
After careful consideration, we opted for a Web2 solution. Hereโs why we made this decision and my thoughts on the limitations of blockchain technology for LOGiiT at this stage.

LOGiiT was designed with commercial divers and supervisors in mind professionals who work in high pressure, fast-paced environments. They need tools that are reliable, efficient, and straightforward to use.
While Web3 offers intriguing possibilities, it introduces a level of complexity that could hinder, rather than help, our users. Blockchain and decentralisation may sound appealing in theory, but in practice, they can disrupt the simplicity and efficiency we strive to provide.

Offshore operations generate vast amounts of data every day. A Web2 solution ensures we can process and store this data quickly and reliably. Blockchain, by contrast, faces scalability challenges, struggling to handle high-frequency transactions without delays or bottlenecks.

Commercial divers and supervisors donโt have time to navigate overly complicated systems. Web2 platforms are familiar, intuitive, and easy to use. In contrast, Web3 often requires an understanding of private keys, wallets, and gas fees all of which can alienate non-technical users.

Web2 solutions allow us to keep operational costs manageable, which benefits both our business and our users. Blockchain systems, on the other hand, often impose transaction fees (or gas fees) that can make them prohibitively expensive for high frequency applications like LOGiiT.

Web2 gives us the ability to protect user data with robust security measures while maintaining the flexibility to correct errors or make updates. Blockchainโs immutability, while often touted as a strength, can be a drawback. Imagine logging an incorrect dive record on an immutable system fixing it could be incredibly difficult.

The offshore industry is still in the early stages of digital transformation. A Web2 platform aligns better with current workflows and compliance requirements, making it a more practical choice for now. Web3, by contrast, is still seen as niche and can be confusing for many in our sector.

Thereโs no denying that blockchain has potential, and Iโm not dismissing its future role. However, itโs important to separate the hype from the reality. Here are some of the limitations we identified:
๐๐ป๐ฒ๐ฟ๐ด๐ ๐๐ผ๐ป๐๐๐บ๐ฝ๐๐ถ๐ผ๐ป: Public blockchains, such as Bitcoin and Ethereum, consume enormous amounts of energy. Even newer models like Proof of Stake, while more efficient, still have a higher environmental impact than traditional systems something we are mindful of given our commitment to sustainability.

Choosing Web2 does not mean weโve closed the door on Web3. We are closely monitoring the evolution of blockchain and other decentralised technologies. When (and if) these technologies mature to a point where they can enhance LOGiiT without adding unnecessary complexity, we will consider integrating them.
For example, blockchain could be a game changer for secure credential verification or automating processes through smart contracts. But for now, our focus remains on delivering a reliable, user-friendly platform that meets the needs of our users today.
